School of Mechanical Sciences (SMS) is a prominent school offering many UG and PG programmes under Odisha University of Technology and Research (OUTR). It is the earliest department which started as Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1981 under the College of Engineering and Technology (CET), a constituent college of OUAT. In 2002, following the formation of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), the department in CET came under its administrative purview.
Subsequently, CET Bhubaneswar was upgraded to a unitary university by the Government of Odisha and renamed as the Odisha University of Technology and Research (OUTR). With this transition, the Department of Mechanical Engineering evolved into the School of Mechanical Sciences (SMS), which now offers a broader range of UG academic programmes including Mechanical Engineering, Robotics & AI, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Aerospace Engineering.
In addition to undergraduate programmes, SMS offers postgraduate degrees in MBA (Finance, Marketing, HR & Operation), M. Tech in Mechanical System Design, Thermal Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Management (Regular and Part Time) and Robotics & Mechatronics. Since 2021, the school has also introduced a Ph.D. program in Mechanical Engineering, covering a wide array of research areas. The current student strength of SMS stands at approximately 1800.
The faculty of the School of Mechanical Sciences (SMS) comprises experts in diverse domains such as Machine Design and Dynamics, Robotics & Mechatronics, Thermal Engineering, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Management, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and MBA(Finance, Marketing, HR & Operation). In addition to its core faculty, SMS also engages guest faculty, adjunct professors, and professors of practice to enrich its academic and research ecosystem. The School also offers a dedicated finishing school programme aimed at enhancing students’ employability skills and preparing them to be industry-ready for campus placements.
The department houses well-equipped laboratories, including:
• Mechanical Lab featuring FFT analyzers, vibration and acoustic instruments, and experimental setups for heat transfer, power systems, refrigeration & air conditioning, Fluid mechanics & hydraulic machines, IC engines, machine dynamics, material testing, mechanical measurement, sensors and actuators, mechatronics and robotics, 3D printing, Digital Manufacturing, Metallography Lab etc.
• CAD/CAM Lab with design and simulation software such as ANSYS, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB etc.
• Mechanical Workshop with a wide range of machines including lathes, milling, drilling, shaping, and grinding machines.
• Flexible Manufacturing Lab equipped with CNC systems, robotics, and machine vision systems.
• Welding Shop with gas welding, arc welding, and TIG & MIG welding setups.
• Under CSR Grant, Siemens has established Smart Factory Lab with the core elements of Industry 4.0 including Automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and data analytics. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are also incorporated, providing students with immersive simulations or remote assistance.
• Phillips Machine Tools has been associated with OUTR in establishing the Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Digital Manufacturing having equipment like Additive manufacturing and subtractive manufacturing systems, CNC systems.
• CADFEM-ANSYS has been associated with OUTR in establishing the CoE on Design and Computational Skilling with an objective for training FEM/CFD analysis in various engineering applications.
The department has several ongoing and implemented research and development projects funded by agencies such as BARC, DST, SERB, TIH-IITG, and AICTE, reflecting its strong commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
Strategic partnerships have been established through MoUs with organisations such as CIPET, CSIR-IMMT, ELEMENTOZ Research, Hubsect Global Corporation, Valnizen Healthcare, and Kayo Ventures to foster intellectual cooperation, research collaboration and technology transfer.
Various student clubs, including ASME and SAE, operate under the umbrella of SMS, to promote technical innovation, engagement and collaboration. Additionally, a number of student-led start-ups have emerged from the school, showcasing entrepreneurial potential.
Both students and faculty are actively involved in innovative projects, with several securing patents granted by the Indian Patent Office. They also have large number of publications in referred national/international journals with high citations.
